Furtwängler News!

2001. 1.5 Newly-found WF unpublished recording
  • [News I] (From Japanese magazine, June 1996. Translation

  • by Wen-Li Kuo, Taiwan, Jan, 2001.)

A new testing disc of WF was found, a report informed
by Japanese WF researcher Mr. Kousuke Hiyama as below:

On Apr. 9, 1995, in Frankfurt's auction of historic
records, there was a 78 rpm 25cm metal disc,
both sides were orchestra version of Brahms
Hungarian dance No.1, conducted by Furt. SP's
both sides' white label paper became yellow
due to old age, printed a date of 1929.8.12,
followed by a hand-writing: "Brahms, Ungarisher
Tanz, No.1, Furtwaengler". The SP Matrix
number is 1648BHI, inside printed as 1648 1/2 BHI,
the inner circular area printed "Mechan, Copt. 1929"

It is ono question that this is DG's testing press.
(judged from label, number, printed text). As far
as known, Furt's pre-war recording of this piece was
    DG's 1930 recording: 2580 1/2 BH only. If this
newly-found disc was proved to be true, it must
be recorded in one year previously but never released.

  • Venezia Disc V-1016,  Furtwangler / E.Kleiber 1948 conducted LPO. Past great conductor E. Kleiber,
father of C.  Kleiber, first release of "Space's music". This is this Maestro first post-war recording,
Furt. and Kna. also recored for UK Decca in this period with LPO, with SP's FFRR recording
technique, which is its most splendid period. Coupling item of this CD included the famous Furt/LPO
Brahms No.2 which was newly transferred from 10 SP matrixes, left the scratch noise of SP as it was
and get good sound quality. It also included 2 other takes of SP,(to fill up the disc), totally from 12
SPs, it can be said as world first release! Bonus track is Furt/ BPO / Rosamunde's "another take" of SP,
recorded in 1929 by DG "Polyfar" recording technique. (Translation by Wen-Li, Kuo, Taiwan, Nov.
    2000.)

The "Polyfar" technique is often seen on the label of the early
electrical recordings of  78s by Deutsche Gramophone
and Polydor. This denotes a special type of electrical recording system
including some optical process which was obviously different from
the mainstream Western Electric system. After a commercial use
for 3 to 4 years, Deutsche Gramophone finally gave away this
system because they were not satisfied with the sound quality.

  • This book was out of print for a long time, can only be found in some secondhand bookstores. The price for a used copy is high or very high. Recently I contacted a secondhand bookstore and was very surprised that they have 25 copies of this book in their stocks. And the price is resonable at US$20.00. So I think there may be some friends on the list want to have this book.

  • Additional information from the book's dealer::

  • Please note the book has mildew damage to the cover. (It was stored in a damp place in the publishers home.) The condition of the book should have been listed as fair to good. The contents of the book are very good, as is the dust wrapper.

I have about 25 copies of this book. I bought a carton at an auction of  the publishers estate. It was stored in a wet area for some time and I thought all the books were damaged. I believe I have at least five or six in good condition except for the smell (which gets less in time.)

Email me if you want additional copies and I will let you know the cost  if all mailed together in one package. They will be less than $27.50 each.

Arte Nova has just published (on 2 CDs) a recording of Furtwaengler's 1st symphony, also with the Staatskapelle Weimar under Albrecht. And, like 3rd, for the first time with the use of the revised, complete score. A German article, "Die Sinfonie als Psychogramm - Wilhelm Furtwaengler", Fono Forum, June 1999, page 42 - 45, complained the sound of the 3rd is a bit dull, but the 1st is recorded in a new location, so the sound should be better.

2000.9.22  Roberto Caamaño: "La Historia del Teatro Colón 1908-1968" (3 vols.)
    Price: USD$600 (ca. 1600 pg.!)  (postage extra-rated)
(one of the most sought-after reference works, including photos of Wilhelm Furtwängler.)

This HUGE (ca. 1600 pg.!), monumental compilation was printed in 1968, to celebrate the theater's 60th. Anniversary. Edition was limited and, incredibly enough, the printing plates were DESTROYED after the printing was made, so this never was, or never will be reprinted. Size of each volume: 30 x 23.5 cm. Lavishly bound in leatherette binding with gold lettering and imprints. EXTREMELY RARE AND DESIRABLE BY COLLECTORS WORLDWIDE!

Volume I: General history of the Theatres in Argentina from the 18th. Century onwards. The actual construction of the present Teatro Colón (with MANY original pictures of the different stages of construction). Then comes a splendid section of about 50 large-scale COLOR photographs of different places of the theatre, diagrams, plans. The rest of Volume I is filled with color pages of scenery/costumes for different stage productions that took place in the theatre--UNIQUE! This volume has 496 pages.

Volume II: Full Chronologies (year by year, month by month, day by day) of ALL the operas, concerts and musical events that took place within the theatre from 1908 to 1968. HUNDREDS of photographs of artists, singers, conductors, composers, régisseurs, etc. A year-by-year account of ALL the activities of Argentina's most important theatre. This volume has 616 pages.

Volume III: Inside views of the theatre and different activities. Again, HUNDREDS OF PHOTOS! The second part of this volume is devoted to a full index of the work, in such detail that you can trace each performance, performer, work, conductor, composer or singer in the greatest detail. This volume has 506 pages.

Condition: NOT USED!, with a very light moisture staining. Otherwise superb.

Price: $600 (US Dollars). Price does not include shipping. A strong, safe cardboard and plastic (styrene) packaging will be supplied at no extra cost, and safe shipping is guaranteed. Shipping costs will be provided upon request and depending on shipping method selected (surface, air, DHL/UPS/FedEx courier).

    2000.9.18  TAHRA Coming New Release
10 November: Ther legendary post-war recordings of Furtwängler  http://www.tahra.com/new2.htm
It was precisely during his last period that Furtwängler made several recordings for EMI and DGG, recordings that have legendary, such as his famous Tristan and his Walküre, Schumann's Fourth, Schubert's Ninth, the Emperor Concerto with Fischer, Fidelio, Beethoven's Third, Fifth and Sixth, Haydn's 88th.

Among the public concerts that were broadcast, recorded and saved by a number of radio stations, some have become real "myths" like the famous Brahms concert in Hamburg, in 1951, with the NDR orchestra; the final Beethoven concert in Berlin, in May 1954 (Fifth and Sixth), the last Beethoven Ninth at Lucerne, with the Philharmonia, only three months before his death, and the fabulous Eroica of 8 December 1952, with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

We are now going to reissue these recordings with the new 24 bit-96 KHz standard from the original analogic tapes. This publication was first released by TAHRA with the kind permission of Mrs. Furtwängler, of EMI London, of the lawyers of the Berlin Philharmonic and of the Philharmonia orchestra.

The Bergfriedhof, 1842 after plans of the gardener Johann Metzger created, ranks with its
tendencyful grave systems and its valuable tree stock among the most beautiful cemeteries
of Germany. It is last Ruhestätte of numerous personalities from the policy, that public life
and the university, under it realm president Friedrich Ebert, the Pfälzer dialect poet
Gottfried Nadler and the conductor and composer William Furtwaengler.

    b.  On Furtwangler Mailing List by Georg Zöllner <zoe@rad6.u-strasbg.fr>:

The Bergfriedhof is Heidelbergs central cemetry, Rohrbacherstrasse some 800 meters
southeast from the center of Heidelberg the Bismarckplatz. Really not very outside Heidelberg.

2000.9.12  Wilhelm Furtwangler's Annotated Conducting Scores were published as microfiche

Until now, those wishing to study Furtwängler's conducting methods have had to rely on his recordings
alone. However, Furtwängler's widow Elisabeth has kindly consented to the microfiche publication of her
husband's annotated conducting scores that are held by the Zentralbibliothek Zürich. They provide
fascinating insights into Furtwängler's interpretative practice. Besides adding expression markings, bowing
and tempo instructions, on occasion Furtwängler also altered the orchestration of the works he conducted -
               in some cases heavily.

These scores are essential source material for any study of Furtwängler's art, and are now available for the
first time to scholars, conductors and music lovers alike.

Annotated conducting scores in this collection:

  • Bach: Triple concerto BWV 1064.
  • Beethoven: Choral Fantasy; Leonore overture No. 2; Symphonies No. 1, 6, and 9.
  • Händel: Concerto grosso HWV 323 & HWV 328.
  • Locatelli: Concerto grosso in f minor.
  • Schumann: Symphony No. 4.
